Ambience

I am a fan of your work and this piece is very ambient. I love it that you can do everything, this is a great loopy piece where a central phrase is repeated over and over, your technique is amazing that u can make this sound this good. with beautiful piano phrases as well as great tempo set by your percussion, this turned out to be an amazing river of sound. of course there are some bumpy rides, specifically around 2.03 where the sound just jambles together and the beauty of this piece is ruined by technlogy... still a great piece never the lest, nice opener and a weaker ending but nevertheless beautiful.
haha on a more random note, are u saying jem is beautiful or savage? im sry i dont understand the contex or the circumstances. great to have my fav ng artist back!

i am also getting into the writing jig, and what do you use to make ur pieces? i guess you use an electronic key board but what would you recommend for me if i dont have one? basically, can you tell me what equpitment you use?

MilkMan-Dan responds:

I use Reason 3.0 and A Yamaha DGX-305 midi keyboard. Frankly I think any Touch sensitive midi keyboard with enough keys will do the trick... shop around and just find one you like for a good price... francy piano's aren't necessary unless you plan to play live with them.

You might also want to try Fruity Loops as a program... I've used it, it's very user friendly where as Reason isn't. Or Cubase... which seems to be a more complicated version of Fruity Loops ;).

Hope that helps and thanks for the awsome review.

creepy yet nice

i didnt read the story, i got the idea... this song is a little creepy... i didnt like the laughs, and the melodies in the first half were really weak. they got better as it progressed with a beter tempo that established exitement, the string harmonic phrases were also weak, should this be remade there is plenty of room for improvement. the fact that this is slow to reach the fast paced section created the effect of mystery, which in my opinion you could have done better with, good start for this song, leaves a marble road for improvement.

MaestroRage responds:

quite true. I didn't quite like how the latter half ended up to be honest. The strings are somewhat badly equalized, and could be molded to fit in better.

Strangely however, I like how the rest of it plays out. This is one of those "personal" preferences of mine. I KNOW that harmonically this doesn't quite work, even has a good amount of clashing notes, but I like it.

I might remake it, though to be honest, the chances of this are slim. I do however appreciate the honesty, thank you TsizzinC.

Thank you again for the review, I apologize for the late response!

Funny tune

this toon is very lively, and casual. i expected a castle breach as something a little less jolly, good overall melodies and harmonies, the costant quater note background theme kinda destroys the lively and dance theme of this song, it reinforces the breaching yet is completely different from the song's nature. majestic prhases tho, gotta love those.

MusicalRocky responds:

Hm, I don't quite see where you're getting jolly from this. Energized, yes, but certainly not happy. Maybe you were thinking a castle breach was just some pounding percussion? If so, you're looking at the wrong composer, man. I don't do anything like that. I really, really rely on melody.

The constant quarter beat tarnishes the theme? It boosts it, in my opinion. Trust me, I wrote the melody first, and after doing that, I decided I needed something alongside it. The celli and bassi and timpani provide some good movement for the piece, I think, encouraging the theme. I'm not too sure how you think the theme is a dance theme. It's a piece of blood-pumping charging into the castle-ness! Haha

I am glad you noticed my carefully composed phrasing though. I did do that intricately. :D

I'm not trying to bash you, or downright dismiss your opinions, but really, did I deserve a 6 for this? I think not, and I say that as humbly as I can. I poured an enormous amount of effort into this composition. It is a contest entry after all.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to review man.

Pumps the blood

Wow, this is a great piece, that really gets you going. Simple string phrases but the greatest part about this piece is the rythem and percussion that really sets the stage. an improvement in your work, i really like the rythem, but when you the drums stop beating, the strings arent dependent enough to sound great, they sound good though. I think the ending may be cut off, so... yeah that last note bothered me a lot lol.

MaestroRage responds:

You are not the first to say the ending bothered them... truth be told I tried to do something there which probably failed... oh well, live and learn!

I believe my other battle song is much more useful then this one, but this was a great precursor for practice! I personally like the strings that play without the percussion, I felt it would serve a neat calm down time before it jumps back into the beat. It works for some, doesn't for others.

Thank you for the review, i'm glad you liked it!

Interesting

This song sounds cultrual and with a lot of wierd background pace like a tribal sence, and the melody with the wierd ?ocarina? idk... well that just makes it seem distant. well I think this piece was just like a river, you wrote it in a straightfoward manner. leaves grounds for improvement.

Chrispington responds:

It's a pan flute.

And yeah, I wrote it in a straightforward manner for a reason, the song represents a journey. Duh.

Thanks for the review.

Tears from my eyes, lifts the spirit

This is a melo piece that flows that defines quality! The melodies really flow out and carries the listener on a calm raft. Majestic phrases sneaks in and lifts ones fighting spirit, this song reminds me to get up once fallen. Beautiful, great job!

SuperTonic64 responds:

:)

You know what? I've never really looked at it like that before. I've had a great deal of pain in my life, but as long as this song uplifts others pain...then I've accomplished something.

Always a struggle against the struggle, huh? :D

Thanks for the review! ^_^

Wonderful

great composition, sounds like you've put a lot of work into this. Nice music, the slow parts are relaxing and beautiful. Really illustrates the piano and its beauty, there is just a great flow that carries this piece, however the transitions from slow to fast is not very subtle, sounds good to my ears though. good work

Wonderful

Nice opening, the long tones seem awkward at first but later it really mix well. Like the bell tones and the offbeat rythem. very dramatic and fast paced like marching men. quick transitions that just fit flawlessly. Nice little retard at the end. Overall this piece is a nice eriee tune that has its ups and downs, the ups covers the downs verywell! Great job again!

MaestroRage responds:

I did enjoy the retard (ritardo? I don't now exactly how it is spelled), and that was in fact the very first time I used something like that. My friend Lacrioso, who also submits here, does it a lot, and does it very very well. So I looked into his melodies and I was able to learn a lot from them!

Thank you for the review, I am glad you liked it!

Lively and energetic

Wow! Where have you been? This is such a good piece I almost gave you a 10. Very nice layering of phrases and a nice set of drums! There are some transitions that didnt quite cut it, and some sloppy phrases that STICKS OUT in the morely exposed section. When the drums start rolling and the song start spinning, everything sounds so amazing, professional. The pieces really fit together in this song, but the pieces alone lacks quality. Nice Job!

Lovely

Weak drums... no offence but its really simple that it seems good in the beginning and just annoying later...
Beautiful phrases with the piano, nice harmonies with whatever that instrument is, very plainly performed, i heard no musical phrases, i feel that you made a computer play this piece and if you did, the computer is not doing your piece justice. And if you performed it actually, play it like you mean it!

ZanyTaco responds:

thanks for the input, and i didnt play the piano i just put in the notes using my mouse in flstudio, I'm trying to finish some of my newer songs so i can upload some new ones. These are all fairly old now.
